International cooperation

The Czech Republic

Since 2003 the Archive of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cracow has been cooperating with the Masaryk Institute and the Archives of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Masarykův ústav a Archiv Akademie věd České republiky, v. v. i.), carrying out research projects as part of the agreement between the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Czech Academy of Sciences (Akademie věd České republiky). The collaborators have also been the Institute of History of Charles University and the Archive of Charles University (Ústav Dějin Univerzity Karlovy a Archiv Univerzity Karlovy) in Prague and the Archive of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. Reciprocal visits to friendly institutions in order to explore the archive collections, extensive archive research and exchange of expertise, have given rise to a lot of joint ventures. In that time over a dozen scientific papers have been published and four primary documents. Considering that in joint projects several authors take part, their bibliography is impressive. A major role popularizing and promoting the activity and the collections of the Archives is played by exhibitions, presented in the heart of Cracow at the Archive of Science at 26, św. Jana St., and in the heart of Prague, at the Czech Academy of Sciences at 3, Národni St. The exhibitions meet with considerable interest of the visitors and, what is equally important, they attract and consolidate the Polish community in Prague and the Czech circles in Cracow. Moreover, the result of the cooperation are also joint conferences, academic sessions, colloquia and workshops on archival methodology and collection editing. Thanks to mutual exchange of publications, the Library of the Archive of Science can boast a significant collection of Czech publications of the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries.

Japan

In 2010, through the agency of Warsaw orientalists, Prof. Agata Bareja-Starzyńska and Prof. Jerzy Tulisow (Department of Turkish Studies and Inner Asian Peoples of the Faculty of Oriental Studies of University of Warsaw), as part of the Japanese project “Erdenezuu – Past, Future and Present”, the Archive of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) and the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU), established cooperation with Prof. Inoue Osamu (Shimane University, Japan) in order to examine and publish documents concerning the Erdene-dzuu monastery (Mongolia) which come from the legacy of Władysław Kotwicz (1872-1944). Thanks to that cooperation, in 2012 the Archive of Science of the PAN and the PAU took part in the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Władysław Kotwicz’s scientific expedition to Mongolia. The celebrations included: an international conference “Exploring Languages and Cultures of Asia. Professor Władysław Kotwicz in Memoriam” (15–17 Nov), combined with the exhibition In the Heart of Mongolia. 100th Anniversary of W. Kotwicz’s Expedition to Mongolia in 1912 (16 Nov 2012–28 Feb 2013) [see the gallery] and the publication In the Heart of Mongolia. 100th Anniversary of W. Kotwicz’s Expedition to Mongolia in 1912 (Studies and Selected Source Materials), ed. Jerzy Tulisow, Osamu Inoue, Agata Bareja-Starzyńska, Ewa Dziurzyńska.

Mongolia

In 2016 the Archive of Science of the PAN and the PAU came into agreement with the Institute of History and Ethnology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences based in Ulaanbaatar and with the Faculty of Oriental Studies of University of Warsaw in order to edit and publish documents concerning the 1915–1916 census in Mongolia, kept at the Archive of Science of the PAN and the PAU as part of Władysław Kotwicz’s (1872–1944) legacy, and publish them in digital form on the website of the Archive of Sciences of the PAN and the PAU. The project is supervised by Prof. Sampildonov Chuluun (the Institute of History and Ethnology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences). The editing and digitalization of the materials has been completed.
